ABOUT US

Our story

On 17 September 2022, we staged our first protest

After a string of sexual assaults in Stroud, Gloucestershire, our co-founder - author and journalist Nikki Owen - wrote a column in the local newspaper talking about how, as women and those who identify as women, we can’t walk and run as freely as men. Nikki sent the article to our co-founder, trainee solicitor Sydney McAllister, who ran the feminist legal platform, FemLegal. The two decided to organise and stage a protest against rising sexual assault. Neither Nikki nor Sydney had ever done anything like this before.

Over 400 people on 17 September 2022 marched the streets, banging drums, to demand an end to sexual violence. Volunteers gave their time to help. It was a day full of hope, care and determination.

The march was a powerful display of solidarity in the community and officially launched This Ends Now as an organisation.

The protest march was an essential achievement for us as it brought attention to the issue of sexual violence and enabled us to form a sustainable working relationship with Gloucestershire Constabulary, through which we launched our Words Matter campaign.

In October 2022, we became a not-for-profit

Working around their day jobs, Sydney and Nikki officially launched This Ends Now as a not-for-profit in the UK in October, 2022. They began applying for funding to build their campaigns, giving media interviews, and changing victim-blaming headlines. It was hard work, but worth it. Then, they began to grow the team.

This Ends Now is run entirely by volunteers

Merging with FemLegal in February 2023, This Ends Now expanded its team. Today, we have 20 incredibly dedicated and talented volunteers. They give their time around their day jobs to smash the patriarchy.

Since our launch, we’ve been invited to parliament to speak about the Victm’s Bill, and we’ve created with Gloucestershire Constabulary the first-ever Words Matter policy for UK police communications teams. The policy focuses on using language that ends victim blaming. Find out more about our campaign and achievements here.

We are the first group to address the patriarchy directly

We understand that male violence against women and girls is not only harmful to individuals but they also negatively impact entire communities and societies. We recognise that these forms of oppression have deep roots in our culture and society, and we are committed to challenging and dismantling these systems.

We’re the first group to address the patriarchy directly and our vision of a world without patriarchy is ambitious, yet we believe it’s achievable. We’re committed to creating real and lasting change by engaging in various activities such as protests, lobbying, and awareness campaigns.

We work to raise awareness about the harmful effects of patriarchy and misogyny and how they contribute to sexual violence and oppression.

We also strive to promote intersectional feminism, which acknowledges and addresses how different forms of oppression intersect. We believe we can foster real change by engaging men in the conversation.

Now we need your support to end patriarchy

We now have a five-year plan to grow so we can employ team members, which will enable us to fast-track our groundbreaking work - and we can only do this with your support. Hop to our donate page to help.
